How to Travel China without a Visa


Just a few years back, China has started a 72 hours and 144 hours visa-free transit policies. This policy allows you to transit and stay in 18 cities of China without a visa. This policy in only available for passengers from 53 countries. Check out the list of countries and the cities in which the policy is applicable.

Qualifying Countries :-  

24 Schengen Agreement countries - These include Austria, Czech Republic, Belgium, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Denmark, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland, Greece and Sweden.

15 Other European Countries of United Kingdom, Ireland, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia - Herzegovina, Montenegro, Macedonia, Belarus, Albania and Monaco

6 American Countries of USA, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and Chile

2 Oceania Countries - Australia and New Zealand

6 Asian Countries - UAE, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Brunei and Qatar

Cities Enjoying the Policy :-

The 18 Chinese cities enjoying these policies are Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Harbin, Shenyang, Dalian, Xian, Guilin, Kunming, Wuhan, Xiamen, Tianjin, Nanjing, Qingdao, Changsha and Hangzhou.

They are planning  to carry out this policy in more and more countries in future.

The cities are divided into groups and each group has different rules as to areas where you are allowed to stay.

Cities with only 72 hour free entry policy : -

1. Guangzhou, Chengdu, Qingdao or Changsha - Passengers transiting through any of these cities are allowed to travel the whole province.
Eg. If you are a transiting passenger through Chengdu, then you are allowed to travel the entire province of Sichuan.

2. Chongqing, Harbin, Guilin, Kunming, Wuhan or Xiamen - Passengers transiting through any of these cities are not allowed to leave the transit city.

3. Dalian or Shenyang - Passengers transiting through any of these cities can travel to these two cities.

4. Xian Xianyang Airport - Passengers transiting through this airport can travel in Xian and Xianyang.

Cities with both 72 hour and 144 hour transit policy : -

1. Shanghai, Hangzhou and Nanjing - Passengers transiting through these cities can travel around the three places. 

2. Beijing, Tianjin and Harbin - Passengers transiting through these cities are also allowed to travel around the three cities for free.

How can you get a 72 hour and 144 hour Visa-Free Transit

The procedure is extremely simple and will not take much of your time. Here are the steps.
  1. Just inform the carrier while boarding that you would like 72 hour or 144 hour visa-free transit.
  2. Fill in the Arrival/Departure card.
  3. Apply for visa-free stay permit upon arrival
  4. Claim the luggage
  5. Go through customs
  6. Leave the airport and get ready to travel China without Visa.

Required Documents : -

1. A valid passport
2. Onward ticket and a visa to Third Country
    Passengers should have an onward ticket with a confirmed seat and date and also a valid Visa for        third country or region. Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau are counted as third regions. For Eg.

    USA - Beijing - USA is not valid
    USA - Beijing - Hong Kong. Canada - Shanghai - Seoul are valid ones.

3. Fully completed Arrival/Departure card
